This morning, Enterprise Nation shared a great infographic on their blog which shows there are 281,197 new start-ups in the UK at the mid-point of the year with the vast majority of them (70%) started from home.

There were 281,197 new start-ups in the UK by June 2014 according to Enterprise Nation
There’s no doubt in my mind that organisations like Enterprise Nation (and countless others up and down the country) have played a major role in educating people and showing them that self-employment is a very real possibility.

Motivations for starting your own business vary from person to person. Some are doing it in their spare time as a second income, others are taking the plunge by turning a long-harboured dream into a reality and others simply have no choice and are forced into it by being unable to find a job.

Whatever the reasons, there is a definite shift in working patterns here in the UK. This is being fuelled by technology with low-cost, high speed broadband, smartphones, apps and cloud-based business software including our own Sage One Accounts (£10 per month) and Sage One Payroll (£5, £10 or £15 per month) services enabling people to manage their entire business online and on the move for very little cost.
