1. Hi Maureen, could you please give me a brief summary of who you are, the name of your business and what you do?
Most of the week I am an office manager, but in my spare time, I run De Ville’s Health & Fitness, a personal training and fitness business based in North Warwickshire.
I started small just running a couple of classes a week in hired halls and at local leisure centres, then in January 2011 opened my own studio in the town. I specialise mainly in running mat-based Pilates classes (or as one of my clients says “keeping people bendy in the middle”) but am now also training to teach Tai Chi and Chigung.
2. Are you a sole trader or limited company / how many people are in your business?
I really am a sole trader – there’s just me. I market myself, teach the classes and do the accounts!
3. How long have you been using Sage One Cashbook? What were you using beforehand and why did you change?
I started using Sage One Cashbook in April 2013. Before that I used Excel spreadsheets but as the business grew it became a nightmare trying to keep track of everything. I was spending hours entering data and trying to get a simple Profit & Loss out of it all.
By the end of 2012 financial year I knew I really needed some kind of accounts software package and started looking around at what was on the market. I didn’t want to spend loads of money and there were several free accounts packages but none of them seemed to be any simpler than my Excel spreadsheets!
I was absolutely thrilled when I trialled the Sage One Cashbook package. Now I can update my accounts in minutes each week and can see exactly how I’m doing at any time.
4. What do you like best about Sage One Cashbook?
It’s simple to use, inexpensive and yet I get all the functions I need and 24hr support when I need it (although I haven’t actually needed it as it’s so easy to use!). To me it’s a really worthwhile investment and perfect for me, even down to being cloud-based so that I don’t clog my computer up and can access it anywhere.
5. What advice would you give to someone starting out in business / following in your footsteps?
Invest in an accounts package like Sage One Cashbook right from the start – keeping track of where you are financially is critical, and who wants to spend whole weekends trying to make spreadsheets balance? I can’t believe it took me as long to realise I could have time off at weekends!
