Parents have been named as the single biggest inspiration and influence for business owners in their careers, a national survey by leading business software and solutions provider Sage has found.
The news comes as the company launches a nationwide campaign to find Britain’s most inspirational business ‘plus ones’.
Sage has found that a quarter of businessmen and women said that the people who have been the most influential to their career or growth of their business are their parents, followed by 20% saying their partner has influenced them the most.
The research has been published by Sage as part of a competition to find Britain’s most inspirational ‘Plus One’ stories from small businesses in the UK and Ireland, asking business owners to nominate the people who have motivated and supported them the most on the entrepreneurial journey.
Simon Hodgkins, Head of Sage One UK and Ireland said: “No entrepreneur ever made it entirely on their own. In the early days of starting a business, everyone relies on the support of that one person who makes the difference. The ‘plus one’. The person who gave them the freedom, confidence or clarity they needed to get their business off the ground. Our latest online product, Sage One Accounts Extra, provides business owners with what they need to take their business to the next level and to celebrate its launch, we are giving business owners the chance to say thank you to the people who helped them where they are today.”
Between now and Christmas, Sage is inviting business owners to nominate the people who gave them the support, understanding or advice that helped them and their business to grow. Each week for nine weeks, Sage will give away £300 worth of Amazon vouchers for the best ‘plus one’ stories.
Sage One Accounts Extra is a significant addition to its online family of business software, solutions and support, and combined with Sage’s unmatched 30 year market knowledge and expertise, has been specifically designed to grow with businesses on their journey – and be another ‘plus one’ support to achieve future business success.
The ‘plus one’ competition has received the backing of small business and entrepreneurship expert Stu Anderson, as well as founder of Enterprise Nation Emma Jones, who have both endorsed the significance of having a business ‘plus one’.
Small business and entrepreneurship expert Stu Anderson said: “We are at a critical stage now the economy is turning a corner – to ensure the wheels do not come off small businesses need to have the flexibility and support to grow and prosper. Having a business ‘plus one’ is important – guidance and support for start-ups and budding entrepreneurs, be that from parents, teachers, or our partners – or indeed the experts like Sage that small businesses entrust with their finances, will put some momentum behind the recovery.”
Lorna Syson, founder of Lorna Syson interiors & bespoke design, and a Sage One customer: “I need to have online access to accounts anytime, anywhere, so that I can see what invoices are coming in and out at a glance. Sage One has been a great business ‘plus one’ for me in that respect – giving me the right technology and support, at the right time so I can focus on growing my business.”
Simon Hodgkins, Head of Sage One UK and Ireland said: “Starting out as a small business ourselves over 30 years ago we understand the challenges of being a small business in Britain. And as growing businesses increasingly want the freedom to choose how, where and when they access business-critical information, the Sage One family provides customers the tools needed to grow in to new markets, operate more efficiently, and plan more effectively for the future.”
