Instead of us just telling you how great Sage One is, we asked real-life user Trudy Jacklin (TM Services) what she thought about our cloud-based software.
1. Hi Trudy, could you please give me a brief summary of who you are, what you do and the name of your business?
I am Trudy Jacklin, one of the Directors of TM Services Audio Visual Limited, based in Ipswich, Suffolk. We are a company that specialises in sound, lights, staging and AV for all types of events from corporate themed award ceremonies, to large outdoor concerts with multiple bands or acts.
2. Are you a sole trader or limited company / how many people are in your business?
We were a sole trader company until April 2012 when we went limited. We now have 7 full time employees and use a number of regular freelance staff when required.
3. How long have you been using Sage One Accounts? What were you using beforehand? Why did you change?
As staffing and turnover increased, and as we went limited, we felt the need to ‘look into’ a formal accounts system, rather than the excel spreadsheets that we were currently using. Although these did everything we needed at the time, we were looking to put in growth for the future and also realised there were probably more things we could benefit from in purchasing some other system. On doing some research, both on the internet, with the accountant and with other businesses, Sage appeared to be the product that everyone recognised and in many cases used.
On phoning Sage, I was offered a 30 day trial of Sage 50, which they felt was the best product for our company. As we run on Mac computers, I then needed to invest in some parallel software to even open the package! Basically, the combination of this and trying to grasp using new software , the accounting system did not work for me. More research required…which is when I came across Sage One. Again, I had a 30 day free trial and ran this system (successfully) alongside my existing spreadsheets, partly to robustly test it, and partly as we were in the middle of a VAT quarter! The spreadsheets were ditched at the end of May!
4. What do you love best about Sage One Accounts?
For someone who had not used an accounts package before, and if honest, found Sage 50 daunting, I got on with it brilliantly from day one. It was easy to use, intuitive and when I did get stuck a couple of times, the Customer Support Team were excellent and sorted me out. It was easy to set up and so we were up and running in no time, which with a growing business, there is no time to stop! As we are regularly out and about at venues, we are a very ‘cloud’ based company, and again Sage One fitted into this beautifully.
I also liked the price – we did not have to tie up a lot of money in one go and the monthly subscription fee made it easy to budget. It is also really useful that the accountant can ‘look in’ on our accounts and see where they are at, or if I have a question, she can see exactly what I am referring to.
5. What advice would you give to someone starting out in business / following in your footsteps?
Spreadsheets are a good way to start, but we all know they have their limits, even with lots of formula! Sage One enables you to do so much more, almost with the click of a button, and before you know it the invoice you have just created has been emailed to the client. To me, this seems a cost effective and a wise use of my time.
