Life's a cabaret: Managing your work/life balance

Running your own business brings with it many benefits. Being your own boss and answering to yourself sounds great, doesn’t it? And no more working nine-to-five means you can work when it suits you best, right?

But not being chained to the standard nine-to-five can actually represent a downside. Many small business owners work a lot more than just the “regular” office hours, with most quite often working well in to the night, especially during the first stages of starting a business

We recently caught up with one of our really cool Sage One customers, Katherine Swatton of Cabaret Rouge, to ask her about how she balances her business and her home life.

How do you manage your work life balance?

Katherine: Well, actually it took me around three years before I realised I needed the separation between work and my personal life. Up until that point I felt like I was working flat-out all of the time.

I guess when you start a business you have to accept that there’s going to be a period of time where you have to work a lot more than the usual hours if you want to succeed.

Once I realised I needed to establish the line between work and my personal life, the first step I took was to get a warehouse in which I could store my costumes and stock. This meant I was no longer sitting down to have tea with my husband with my work all around me at home.

Prior to doing this, I had always felt like I should be working and that made it really hard to stop and relax.

What do you do to recharge?

I’m very much into keeping fit, so I take time to myself every day to go for a run.

Often, I sit at my desk to eat lunch while I’m working so I need this time to do something I enjoy to unwind. This really helps me to help de-stress and stops me feeling like I’m constantly working.

How do you manage your priorities?

Well, every day I have my alarm set to wake me up early. I then have breakfast before getting ready and sitting down to work.

I can then sift through the daily workloads, so the earlier I start work the sooner I can deal with these straight away, rather than lying in until later in the morning and then having backlog of work to catch up on. So for me, it’s important to have this self-discipline and focus.

How has Sage One helped your work life balance?

Sage One is very quick to work on. I can add purchase invoices, expenses and cash receipts and payments all really quickly. I just tap them in and it’s done.

All of the calculations are without the need for me to work them out manually using spreadsheets or a calculator.

Sage One is very easy to use, it’s saved me so much time and stress in managing my business finances.

Finally, do you have any top tips you can share for other small business owners?

My number one top tip is to keep on top of your accounts! If you don’t, it’s going to take you a lot of time and money to get it right at the end of the year.

Secondly, make sure you take that time for yourself and make sure you do this every day.

You need to have that separation between work and your personal life and this is a great way of doing it.
